WIT-TSSG is an internationally recognised centre ofexcellence for ICT research and innovation at the
Waterford Institute of Technology. We carry out a wide spectrum of industry-informed research in
Information and Communications Technologies (ICT), particularly technologies enabling communications
and information services. In IPaCSO 2 research departments in WIT will actively contribute to the activities.
WIT-TSSG’s Security & Trust Research (STR) group within WIT-TSSG addresses the management of
security and privacy concerns throughout the research life-cycle. This is achieved through the development
of tools and practices to aid organisations and individuals in firstly understanding security, trust and privacy
issues related to their activities and secondly, successfully mitigating against these threats. STR technical
expertise includes building formal security models, predicting trustworthiness based on reputation and
reliability data, compliance evaluation of data handling practices, specifying access control policiesand data
handling rules, formal reasoning over knowledge bases, and the modelling of access control system
performance. In addition, the team has an extensive experience in modelling, software architectures and
software development. STR members have generated several open source projects and this experience and
knowledge places STR in the perfect position to extend or reuse these projects in generic, as well as bespoke,
security related industry focussed solutions. Some of the many security related projects that STR members
have been active in are ComiFin, FutureComm, BIC, EffectsPlus, EternalS, Seccord and Aniketos.
